Parkside Yards played host for the first time to a special repair café on 31st October, with residents from The Green Quarter and across the wider Southall community invited to pop in with their broken electricals with the hope of giving the items a new lease of life.

With the cost of living high, and many of us looking for ways to be more sustainable, the repair café proved to be extremely popular. Not only were a range of items fixed for free, but the fantastic team of organisers also undertook training sessions – for people who simply want to learn how to fix things at home and avoid waste, but also to recruit a new cohort of repair volunteers for future sessions.

In addition, a special toy repair session on the same day – created and led by a resident of The Green Quarter – invited local people to bring in their much-loved but broken toys to give them a new lease of life. During the afternoon, the activity also evolved into an exciting toy-making craft project for attendees, who got involved in making new toys from existing materials provided by OPEN Southall. The toy repair session was funded by The Green Quarter’s Community Chest, a grant programme for residents to inspire their creativity and bring neighbours together.

We hope to run more repair sessions in the future; check back for more information!
